Extract attachments from Google Calendar events
Pull linked files from calendar events for compliance, migration, or downstream automation using a delegated service account.
| Who it is for | Engineering or operations teams automating compliance, archiving, or reporting workflows involving event attachments. |
|---|---|
| APIs | Calendar API, Drive API |
| Typical scopes | calendar.readonly, drive.readonly |
The problem
Calendar event attachments are often missed in compliance sweeps or migrations because they're not in mailbox or shared drive exports. Manual extraction is unreliable and doesn't scale.
How it works
- List events with attachments using the Calendar API and impersonation.
- Extract file IDs from the event 'attachments' field (these are Google Drive file links, not raw files).
- Fetch file metadata and content using the Drive API, impersonating the event organiser or attendee.
- Log extracted files and link them back to the originating event for traceability.
What changes
Event attachments are reliably extracted and mapped, closing a common blind spot for compliance or migration.

Questions people ask
Do you get the file itself or just the link?
You get the Drive file ID from the event, but must fetch the file separately with the Drive API, under the right user's context.
What about non-Google Drive attachments?
Only Google Drive files are supported as attachments in modern Calendar events; legacy uploads or external links may not be extractable.
