The problem

Cancelled projects, departed staff, and old meeting series clutter calendars and cause confusion. Recurring events persist long after their relevance, leading to accidental joins and missed updates.

How it works

  1. List all users in scope via the Admin SDK.
  2. For each user, impersonate and query their calendars for recurring events matching criteria (age, organiser, keyword).
  3. Use the Calendar API to delete or modify the matching recurring events.
  4. Log all changes for review and possible restoration.

What changes

Calendars reflect current reality, reducing missed meetings and miscommunication, and making scheduling less error-prone.

The trap in this one. The Calendar API’s 'delete' on a recurring event only removes the series if you target the master eventId—deleting a single instance leaves the rest intact. If you iterate over instances, you’ll miss the parent and leave the recurrence active. Always target the recurringEventId, not the individual occurrenceId, or orphaned events will persist with no obvious organiser.

Questions people ask

Can I recover deleted events if needed?

No, Calendar API deletes are permanent. Log event details before deletion for potential manual recreation.

Will attendees be notified when events are deleted?

Yes, deleting the master recurring event will send cancellation notices to all attendees, unless you suppress notifications in the API call.

Want this built?

This is a pattern we run in production. We will set up the delegation and build this on top of it — $500 per hour, most of it working the same day.
