Export Google Group membership on a fixed schedule
Produce a reliable export of group members for auditing, compliance, or external sync by querying the Admin SDK as a service account.
| Who it is for | IT and compliance teams needing regular evidence of group membership across tenants. |
|---|---|
| APIs | Admin SDK |
| Typical scopes | admin.directory.group.member.readonly |
The problem
Manual checks of group membership are inconsistent and quickly out of date, making audit trails and external system sync unreliable. Automated exports need to run without human intervention and must reflect the current state.
How it works
- Use a domain-wide delegated service account with the group member read scope.
- Schedule a job (e.g., nightly) to call the Admin SDK and list group members for each relevant group.
- Write the membership lists to a central, timestamped location for later review or downstream sync.
- Retain historical exports to track changes over time.
What changes
Auditors and systems get a definitive, timestamped record of group membership, with no manual steps or gaps.
Questions people ask
Does the export include nested group members?
No, the API returns only direct members. You must recursively resolve nested groups if you need a flattened list.
How should deleted groups be handled?
Track group existence separately. The API will error if a group is deleted between scheduling and export, so log and reconcile missing groups.
Want this built?
This is a pattern we run in production. We will set up the delegation and build this on top of it — $500 per hour, most of it working the same day.
